Writing a novel about a game?

Can I legally write and attempt to publish a novel in the making say about the game Half-Life? It's already been done with the Doom series (by daffydab hugh and brad lineweaver) , what would I have to do to go about doing this? I already started it but dont plan on finishing unless I can do something with it
