Vista vs XP?

I am looking to get a new laptop but I don't think Vista will work with my cad programs. Should I just stick with XP? Is Vista worth it? The people at the computer places say that Vista will be compatable soon, but then can't tell me when. I don't want to buy a computer and not be able to use it for the next 6+ months.
